Wimbledon 2026: Video Review Technology to Debut, Enhancing Umpire Call Challenges on Show Courts
March 21, 2026
Wimbledon will introduce video review technology to challenge chair umpire calls during singles matches, expanding officiating beyond the existing electronic line calling system.
The 2026 Championships will run from late June, with video review available for singles on designated show courts, including Centre Court and Court One.
Six show courts will feature the new system, with on-screen indicators showing 'out' and 'fault' calls across all courts' scoreboards.
Electronic line calling (ELC) will remain in use, while the new review system adds another layer of officiating rather than replacing ELC.
The initiative functions as an addition to on-court officiating and does not modify the existing ELC framework.
The All England Lawn Tennis Club confirmed the updates in a news release, citing improvements informed by feedback from 2025 and player and public input.
A hindrance review feature will let players flag conduct affecting a point, with reviews possible at the end of a point or immediately after for hindrance scenarios.
The system will address human-judgment calls such as doubles bounces, touches, and possible interference, operating independently from ELC.
A point-review workflow will allow challenges based on video playback, with umpire intervention as needed.
Recent high-profile uses of video review, including Medvedev-Draper matches, illustrate the types of calls the new reviews aim to address, such as hindrance and grey-area situations.
VAR will be available for men’s and women’s singles on No.2 Court, No.3 Court, Court 12, and Court 18, making Wimbledon the third Grand Slam to adopt VAR after the US Open and Australian Open.
