India Launches Phase III of e-Courts Project: A New Era in Judicial Digital Transformation
April 11, 2026
Building on Phase I and II, the initiative expands infrastructure, court computerisation, standardised case management, e-filing, virtual hearings, and tools like the National Judicial Data Grid and Vidhik Anuvad translation software.
At the two-day National Conference on Judicial Digital Transformation, the aim is to discuss strategies for optimizing judicial processes through digital innovation and e-governance to broaden access to justice and boost system efficiency.
Chief Justice of India formally launched Phase III of the e-Courts project, with an outlay of Rs 7,210 crore, to transform justice delivery across India.
Phase III shifts emphasis from mere digitisation to systemic transformation, prioritising accessibility, reduced distance barriers, and tackling structural inefficiencies in the judiciary.
Justice Vikram Nath, chair of the e-Committee, spoke at the inaugural session, with Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and IT Minister Jitin Prasada in attendance.
The Phase III launch occurs during the National Conference on Judicial Digital Transformation in New Delhi, with participation from Supreme Court Justices, Union ministers, and various officials.
Phase III includes efforts to bridge the digital divide by expanding services to rural and underserved areas, notably through eSewa Kendras that assist litigants with status checks, filings, and virtual hearings.
New Phase III initiatives include a Single Sign-On service portal, electronic delivery of court documents, e-Courts–e-Prisons integration, and a new Services Mobile App (Version 4.0) to enhance transparency and citizen-centric service.
The CJI described digital transformation as a constitutional instrument to strengthen the rule of law, promote equality before the law, and reduce procedural rigidity.
The Phase III project is supported by the Government of India and conceptualized by the e-Committee, aligning with the National ICT policy and action plan for the judiciary since 2005.
