Ford Recalls 741,195 Vehicles Over Rollaway Risk, Offers Free Repairs and Software Update
June 30, 2026
Ford is recalling 741,195 vehicles in the United States over a transmission defect that can damage the park system and cause rollaway, a problem linked to dozens of property-damage claims and several injuries.
The defect allows the transmission park pawl to momentarily engage while the vehicle is moving when certain shifts are commanded, potentially damaging park system components and reducing parking effectiveness if the parking brake isn’t applied.
Affected models with park-by-wire and 10R80 transmissions include the Lincoln Navigator and Expedition (2018–2021), Explorer and Lincoln Aviator (2020–2021), and Ford F-150 pickups (2020–2021).
Owners will be notified and dealers will perform a Powertrain Control Module software update, inspect for park-system damage, and replace damaged components at no charge.
The recall also requires an inspection for damage and replacement of any damaged parts as needed, with the service provided at no cost to owners.
Interim owner notification letters are set to begin on August 3, 2026, with a full remedy expected in April 2027; dealerships will be alerted on August 7 and initial owner notices will go out between August 10 and 14.
VIN searchability for recall 26S47 will start August 7 on NHTSA.gov, and Ford/ Lincoln owners should monitor mail for notices and remedy details.
Owners can contact Ford customer service or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline for information, and NHTSA notes Ford’s broader safety actions and a push to improve quality and testing across models from 2020 to 2026.
Some fender flares on Bronco lineup are involved in related recalls, with tooling issues noted for both black and painted flares.
Remedies for specific recalls include inspecting fender flares, replacing retaining pins, repairing loose flares, or installing new flares where needed, at no charge.
Owners should look for indicators such as gaps or sagging around the flare, rattling sounds at highway speeds, or visible looseness to identify affected vehicles.
The recall will include a software update to detect excessive force in the transmission and alert the driver when service is required.
