Google Urges Chrome Update Amid High-Severity Security Alert for Windows, macOS, and Linux Users
August 16, 2026
Google has issued security updates for Chrome and users should verify they’re on the latest build by checking the About page and applying the patch.
CERT-In issued a high-severity warning for Chrome users across Windows, macOS, and Linux due to multiple vulnerabilities that could enable remote code execution, unauthorized access, or denial of service.
Five CVEs affect Chrome components (V8, TabStrip, Extensions, HTML, Blink) with versions prior to 151.0.7922.137/.138 on Windows/macOS and prior to 151.0.7922.137 on Linux; Google has rolled out fixes in the Stable Channel.
Exploitation could occur via specially crafted webpages or malicious web requests, potentially enabling arbitrary code execution or browser/system disruption.
India has seen an 85% rise in reported cyber-security incidents from 2023 to 2025, highlighting a rapidly expanding threat landscape and the need for timely patching and defenses.
CERT-In warns that targets may be reached through crafted web requests, phishing messages, malicious webpages, or extensions, underscoring the importance of safe browsing even when there are no obvious symptoms.
The alert is issued by India’s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
CERT-In urges affected organizations to implement remedial measures and coordinate with regulators, law enforcement, and service providers as part of a broader national cyber-security response, including initiatives like the National Cyber Coordination Centre and Cyber Swachhta Kendra.
The core security message remains: regularly patch software, be cautious with links and unfamiliar content, and keep defenses current amid rising cyber threats in India.
The overarching call is to keep desktop browsers up to date to defend against attacks via malicious webpages or links.
Exploitation could target users without physical device access through malicious links or webpages, making timely updates essential for all desktop Chrome users.
The vulnerabilities involve use-after-free flaws in Chrome components (V8, TabStrip, HTML, Extensions, Blink) that could be exploited by visiting a malicious page or clicking a crafted link.
