William Finn, celebrated for his contributions to Broadway through works like 'Falsettos' and 'The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,' passed away on April 7, 2025, at the age of 73.

In recognition of his significant impact on the industry, the Broadway In Memoriam Committee will dim marquee lights at select theatres on June 17, 2025, at 6:45 PM specifically for Finn.

This marks Finn as the first individual to receive a dedicated marquee dimming under a new initiative aimed at honoring significant figures in Broadway.

Participating theatres in this tribute include The Hayes Theatre and The Gershwin Theatre, among others.

Finn was previously honored during a group dimming ceremony on June 10, 2025, where all 41 Broadway theatres dimmed their lights for one minute to pay tribute to multiple artists.

The June 10 event also recognized notable figures such as Marshall Brickman and Richard Chamberlain.

The initiative for quarterly group dimming ceremonies was established to address past controversies regarding the recognition of overlooked individuals.

These group dimming ceremonies are scheduled for the second Tuesday of September, December, March, and June, and are regarded as a prestigious honor in the Broadway community.

While group memorials are planned, the Committee retains the ability to honor individuals with solo ceremonies if their contributions are deemed profound.

The Committee clarified that the quarterly group dimmings do not prevent individual tributes by theatre owners, allowing for traditional solo honors.

Previous individual dimming ceremonies have honored notable figures like Stephen Sondheim and Chita Rivera, amidst discussions about recognition for others.

The theatres participating in the June 17 tribute include The Hayes Theater, The Broadhurst Theatre, The Gershwin Theatre, The Walter Kerr Theatre, The Circle in the Square Theatre, and The Vivian Beaumont Theater.
