August 28, 2025
The first Broadway revival of the cult classic musical 'Chess' is set to open at the Imperial Theatre on October 15, 2025, with an official opening scheduled for November 16.
This revival features a new book by Emmy Award winner Danny Strong, with music by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA, and lyrics by Tim Rice, directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer.
The production will have a concert-like atmosphere, blending scenes with a high-energy, multi-actor staging that emphasizes the musical's political and personal stakes.
Leading the cast are Tony Award winner Aaron Tveit, making his first Broadway appearance since 2006, alongside Lea Michele and Nicholas Christopher, with additional casting details to be announced.
The musical's origins trace back to a 1984 concept album about the Cuban Missile Crisis, with previous notable productions including the 1986 West End debut and the 1988 Broadway run, both receiving mixed reviews.
The production is presented by arrangement with The Shubert Organization, Three Knights, and Robert Fox Ltd., with choreography by Lorin Latarro and music supervision by Brian Usifer.
Tickets will be available for presale starting June 25, 2025, and for the general public from June 26, 2025, through March 15, 2026.
Aaron Tveit recently released a preview of his performance singing 'One Night in Bangkok,' one of the show's most iconic songs, which reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1984.
Key songs such as 'Heaven Help My Heart,' 'Nobody’s Side,' and 'Anthem' remain central to the show, with the track list potentially varying in the revival.
Overall, this production continues the show's legacy as a cult classic with a significant cultural impact, attracting high-profile talent and offering a fresh take on its compelling story.
The story centers on American and Russian chess champions during the Cold War, exploring themes of politics, identity, and betrayal through a love triangle set against the geopolitical tensions of 1979-1983.
The revival aims to make 'Chess' accessible and engaging for both musical theater enthusiasts and pop music fans, highlighting its political themes and musical excellence.
