September 15, 2025
A rare, limited edition copy of Agatha Christie's 'The Mousetrap,' once owned by actor Lord Richard Attenborough, is being sold for £7,500 and will be displayed at Shapero Rare Books to celebrate the 135th anniversary of Christie's birth.
This special edition features a personal inscription from Christie, dated 1958, addressed to Lord Attenborough, who was part of the original West End cast playing Detective Sergeant Trotter.
The inscription commemorates a gift given to Attenborough on the play’s sixth anniversary in 1952, referencing the role he played in the production.
Lord Richard Attenborough, brother of Sir David Attenborough, was an original cast member of 'The Mousetrap' and later became a renowned actor and Oscar-winning director, known for films like 'Gandhi' in 1982.
Attenborough, who performed alongside his wife Sheila Sim in the original cast, went on to have a distinguished career, winning eight Oscars for his work on 'Gandhi'.
'The Mousetrap' is the world's longest-running play, first performed in 1952, and is a murder mystery set in Monkswell Manor, adapted from a 1947 radio play 'Three Blind Mice' written for the royal family.
