Goodman Theatre Celebrates 100 Years with Free Events, Mayor's Proclamation, and Community Initiatives
October 20, 2025
The Goodman Theatre is celebrating its 100th anniversary since opening in Chicago on October 20, 1925, with a series of special events and initiatives, including a proclamation by Mayor Brandon Johnson designating October 20, 2025, as 'Goodman Theatre Centennial Day'.
As part of its centennial celebrations, the theatre launched the '100 Free Acts of Theater' initiative in July, in collaboration with Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, to engage communities across the city by programming events within various Chicago wards.
Continuing its outreach, the Goodman Theatre is offering a School Matinee Series with free tickets for Chicago Public School students to see 'A Christmas Carol' in December, along with professional development support for teachers and a partnership with Lookingglass Theatre to showcase Chicago’s diverse performance arts.
Upcoming free community events include a listening party called 'The Treehouse' in Ward 27 on October 30, focusing on themes of rest and healing through disco and house music; a tribute to Native Lakota veteran William Smith with a documentary screening and remembrances in Ward 33; and the Frankie Knuckles House Music Festival in Ward 8 on November 15, celebrating Chicago’s rich house music legacy.
Additional planned activities for the theatre's anniversary include a Teen Studio voiceover workshop and a two-day storytelling festival called GeNarrations at The Goodman Theatre in November, aimed at engaging youth and celebrating community narratives.
