RSPCA Under Fire: Celebrities and Campaigners Demand End to Flawed Farm Animal Welfare Scheme
September 26, 2024
The RSPCA has initiated a comprehensive review of its farm animal welfare scheme, RSPCA Assured, amid allegations that the system is failing to enforce legal standards.
This review follows a coalition of 60 organizations, including celebrities like Ricky Gervais and Joanna Lumley, calling for the abolition of the assurance scheme due to serious welfare concerns.
Undercover investigations at around 40 certified farms revealed troubling issues such as overcrowding, poor hygiene, and instances of physical abuse of livestock.
The investigations were prompted by the release of undercover footage that suggested potential violations of legal standards, leading to unannounced visits to all identified farms.
As a result of these investigations, the RSPCA confirmed that two farms were removed from the scheme, while five others faced sanctions, including warnings.
An RSPCA spokesperson emphasized the organization's commitment to animal welfare and the seriousness with which it addresses concerns raised by the investigations.
Critics have labeled the RSPCA Assured scheme as 'welfare-washing,' arguing that it does not adequately ensure the welfare of farmed animals.
The coalition of campaign organizations is pushing for the cancellation of the RSPCA Assured scheme, citing the welfare issues identified in the investigations.
Chris Packham, president of the RSPCA, has also called for the suspension of the assurance scheme in light of these findings.
The RSPCA Assured scheme, which has been in place for 30 years and was previously known as Freedom Food, requires farms to meet strict welfare standards that exceed legal requirements.
Products certified under the RSPCA Assured label are available at major supermarkets and restaurants, aiming to inform consumers about superior animal welfare practices.
The findings from the ongoing independent review of the RSPCA Assured scheme are expected to be released after thorough analysis.
