The recent reform of the NHS app has resulted in 1.5 million fewer missed appointments, significantly improving waiting times for elective surgeries and other services.

As of April 2025, 87% of hospitals in England are now providing appointment information through the NHS app, surpassing the initial target of 85% set for March 2025.

The government plans to further expand the app's capabilities as part of an Elective Reform initiative aimed at delivering an additional two million appointments by the end of 2025.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting highlighted that the app enhances patient access to services and allows healthcare professionals to focus more on treatment, thereby reducing waiting lists.

Dr. Vin Diwakar, NHS national clinical transformation director, noted that the app empowers over 37 million users and significantly enhances NHS productivity by minimizing missed appointments.

The shift towards digital services has also led to a reduction of nearly 12 million paper letters sent to patients, saving the NHS £5.2 million in postage costs.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer emphasized the critical role of technology in NHS reform, stating it is essential for improving patient access and reducing hospital backlogs.

The rollout of the NHS app has been well-received by healthcare professionals and patient advocacy groups, who recognize its potential to empower patients and improve healthcare management.

A pilot program using the NHS app for breast screening appointments was conducted between December 2024 and February 2025, with plans for expansion to cervical screening in spring 2025.

Government data indicates that hospitals utilizing the app's features have experienced a three-percentage-point improvement in the number of patients waiting less than 18 weeks for treatment.

Despite the progress, concerns about digital access barriers for some patients remain, prompting initiatives to support online health services in 1,400 libraries across England.
