Viral Fame Seekers Face Sentencing for Felling Iconic Sycamore Gap Tree and Damaging Hadrian's Wall
July 15, 2025
Daniel Graham, 39, and Adam Carruthers, 32, are set to be sentenced on July 15, 2025, for deliberately felling the iconic Sycamore Gap tree and causing damage to Hadrian's Wall.
The pair were convicted in May 2025 of causing over £622,191 ($832,821) in damages to the tree and an additional £1,144 to Hadrian's Wall, with the act taking less than three minutes.
The destruction of the beloved 100-year-old tree, a symbol of Northumberland and featured in the film 'Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves,' sparked national and international outrage, with the National Trust expressing shock over its loss.
Efforts are underway to restore the tree, with the National Trust planting 49 saplings grown from its seeds, and an art installation featuring part of the felled tree displayed at a visitor center.
The destruction of the tree, which had been awarded the Woodland Trust's Tree of the Year in 2016, has led to calls for tough sentencing, with the maximum penalty being up to 10 years in prison.
Judge Mrs. Justice Lambert warned the defendants that they could face a lengthy prison sentence when they are sentenced on July 15, 2025.
Graham has also faced eviction from his property following a planning dispute that turned his field into an illegal builder's yard, and he is expected to face homelessness upon release from prison.
The incident has highlighted the cultural and historical significance of the tree, which was also damaged when it fell onto Hadrian's Wall, an ancient monument.
Their actions, filmed during the incident, were described by prosecutors as a 'moronic mission' motivated by a desire for viral fame, and the footage showed them encouraging each other.
The court heard that the act was carried out during a storm in September 2023, with Graham and Carruthers traveling over 40 minutes from Cumbria to carry out the act, which was later linked to Graham through video evidence and phone messages.
Following their arrest, the two men blamed each other for the crime, with Graham claiming Carruthers had a fascination with the tree, though both were found guilty.
