UK Launches £10 Million Initiative for Clean Energy in Community Buildings
July 17, 2025
The UK Government has announced a £10 million funding initiative to support clean energy projects in community buildings such as libraries, fire stations, and care homes.
This funding is provided by the publicly-owned Great British Energy, which will assist mayoral authorities in installing solar panels, batteries for renewable energy storage, and electric vehicle chargers.
Great British Energy's CEO, Dan McGrail, emphasized that the initiative aims to deliver tangible benefits like job creation, lower energy bills, and a cleaner future for communities.
Energy Secretary Ed Miliband highlighted that the funding will help reduce energy costs for local facilities, enabling more resources to be directed toward public services.
Additional projects include solar schemes for police headquarters in Cambridgeshire, an outdoor market in Yorkshire, and a former colliery site in the East Midlands.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by Great British Energy to allocate £180 million for clean energy projects across approximately 200 schools and hospitals.
Specific projects include rooftop solar installations on care homes and leisure centers in Merseyside, as well as solar and battery systems for libraries and fire stations in Greater Manchester.
Officials estimate these projects could save around £1 million annually and £35 million over their lifetime on energy bills, while also improving energy security and creating jobs.
In West Yorkshire, Leeds City Council's Arium plant nursery and Lotherton Hall estate will benefit from this funding.
The overall goal of these initiatives is to help communities save money, improve public services, and reduce carbon emissions.
