UK Faces Heavy Rain, Potential Flooding Amid Drought and Record Summer Heat
August 28, 2025
Most of the UK is expected to experience showers or longer spells of rain, especially in western areas, with some heavy rainfall and potential flooding impacting homes, businesses, and transportation services like buses and trains.
Despite the wet conditions, temperatures in the south will remain around 20°C, but colder weather is forecast across the UK throughout September due to dominant low-pressure systems.
Meanwhile, five regions in the UK have been officially declared in drought by the National Drought Group, with ongoing restrictions and concerns over water supply during the dry season.
Public advisories recommend residents check flood risks, prepare emergency flood plans, and plan travel accordingly, as surface water flooding and travel disruptions are possible.
Residents are advised to prepare for power outages by having torches, batteries, and mobile chargers ready, and to stay updated with weather warnings, which may change.
This summer is likely to be the UK's warmest on record, with an average temperature of 16.13°C up to August 25, surpassing previous top summers since 2000, including 2018, 2006, 2003, 2022, and 1976.
Regions affected by the weather warnings include London, the south coast (Kent, East Sussex, West Sussex, Hampshire, Dorset, Devon, Cornwall), and parts of south Wales like Swansea and Cardiff.
Due to prolonged dry conditions and falling reservoir levels, hosepipe bans remain in effect in parts of the UK, including Thames Water, Southern Water, South East Water, and Yorkshire Water, with some reservoirs reaching their lowest levels in over a year.
The unsettled weather may include isolated thunderstorms, primarily near the coast, which could lead to surface water flooding and travel disruptions.
The local IW Met Office has not issued any specific alerts or warnings at this time.
