A new UK-EU food trade deal will significantly reduce border checks on imported meat, fish, fruits, and vegetables, lowering costs for food businesses and helping to keep grocery prices down for consumers, especially in the North West of England.

Small and medium-sized food businesses will save up to £200 per shipment by no longer needing Export Health Certificates, easing logistics and potentially reducing food prices for shoppers.

This agreement will eliminate most border checks on key food imports, allowing businesses to save time and money, which could contribute to more affordable food for consumers.

Economic Secretary Emma Reynolds visited Lidl GB’s distribution hub in Runcorn, where Lidl announced a £435 million investment to upgrade warehouses in Leeds and London, creating over 500 jobs and boosting supply capacity.

During her visit, Reynolds highlighted the government’s support for the trade deal and Lidl’s investment, which reflects confidence in the UK market and aims to strengthen supply chains.

Lidl GB emphasizes that their investments are designed to make good food more accessible to households and to support their expansion plans, demonstrating confidence in the UK’s economic future.

The company’s investment aims to enhance supply capacity and promote growth, aligning with the government’s long-term strategy to foster economic development and support working families.

The trade deal is expected to boost the UK economy by approximately £5.1 billion annually, with particular benefits for small and medium-sized food businesses through the removal of Export Health Certificates.

The deal also facilitates easier movement of goods across the Irish Sea, strengthening trade and supply chain efficiency between the UK, Ireland, and the EU.
