Police Scotland has been instructed by COPFS to investigate six deaths at Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, with investigators focused on whether infections acquired in the hospital contributed to the fatalities.

COPFS-directed inquiries have led Police Scotland to lead the investigations into these deaths as part of ongoing reviews into sudden and unexplained deaths.

A Crown Office spokesman stresses the investigations are thorough and independent, and families will be updated as significant developments arise.

Reports indicate the probe spans six deaths—three adults and three children—with earlier confirmations that some cases date back to 2017, including Milly Main, who died at age 10.

NHSGGC acknowledges a probable link between infections and the hospital environment, notably the water system, and has apologized to affected patients and families; they state today’s safety at QEUH and the Royal Hospital for Children.

NHSGGC reiterates its support for the investigation while declining to comment further at this time.

The Scottish Hospitals Inquiry previously suggested an environmental connection to hospital infections, a point NHSGGC reiterated in closing submissions.

The current probe builds on prior hospital inquiries, maintaining scrutiny of infection control and environmental factors at the hospital campus.

Two additional cases are being considered as potentially linked to the hospital environment: Tony Dynes (May 2021) and Andrew Slorance (December 2020).
