Urgent Search for Two Missing American Tourists in Scottish Highlands
May 24, 2026
Police Scotland has launched an urgent search for two missing individuals in Scotland’s Highlands: Adam Chalmers, a 36-year-old American tourist, who disappeared while hiking in the Ben Lawers range after planning to climb three Munros, with his last message indicating one Munro remained.
Authorities say there are no suspicious circumstances known and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
The report notes an ongoing search effort, with coordination among responders as investigators pursue any lead to locate him and determine his route.
Police are asking anyone who was hillwalking in the Lawers area on Saturday, or who has information about Chalmers’ whereabouts, to contact 101 (incident 2881) and share any sightings or route details.
The family has expressed gratitude to Police Scotland, Tayside Mountain Rescue, RAF Mountain Rescue, and all agencies involved in the search.
A body was found in the An Stac area around 1:25 PM on Sunday, concluding the major search operation.
Chalmers’ clothing at the time of disappearance included a green and blue triangle-patterned fleece, a grey and black waterproof jacket, green walking trousers, a blue cap, brown boots, and a rucksack with orange elastic ties.
Descriptions of Chalmers reiterate: white, about 5 feet 11 inches tall, stocky, bald with a medium-length brown beard.
Separately, authorities are appealing for information on Timothy Rosser, a 60-year-old American tourist last seen in Glencoe driving a black rental car (registration LE75 FNO) and not checking into pre-booked hotels, which is out of character.
Chalmers was last in contact at around 12:40 PM on Saturday from the Ben Lawers range, confirming plans to complete Meall Greigh, Meall Garbh and An Stuc, with one summit left.
Two missing hikers are identified; Chalmers is described as white, around 5 ft 11 in, stocky, bald with a brown beard, wearing a green and blue patterned fleece, a grey/black waterproof jacket, green walking trousers, a blue cap, brown boots, and carrying a rucksack with orange elastic ties.
