The UK government unveils a sweeping reform of England’s mental health services, creating 100 new community mental health centres and 59 dedicated mental health emergency departments to be placed in high-street sites like libraries and banks for earlier, closer support.

Officials emphasize early intervention, accessibility, and reducing reliance on A&Es to prevent crises and improve outcomes for children and young people.

Charities such as Rethink Mental Illness and Mind welcome the expansion, noting potential for earlier intervention and crisis point reduction, while cautioning ongoing strain on services.

Prime Minister signaled this expansion as the biggest NHS mental health redesign in a generation, aimed at crisis prevention by bringing care closer to home.

From autumn 2026, more than 150 new mental health centres will open across England, expanding the existing pilot to 106 community-based centres and 59 new mental health emergency departments.

Rising demand is reflected in referrals growing from about 1.95 million in May 2024 to 2.10 million in May 2025 and 2.36 million by May 2026, underscoring the need for expanded access.

A total of 82 emergency facilities will operate within A&Es and alongside MHEDs to ease pressure on busy A&Es and shorten waiting times for mental health care, with enhanced same-day assessments for those medically fit.

The rollout is backed by 343 million pounds, with initial sites opening in autumn and further facilities planned from March 2027 as part of the broader Mental Health Strategy and independent reviews due in autumn 2026.

The plan combines community hubs and Mental Health Emergency Departments, integrating locations into hospitals, libraries, banks, and other high-street sites to provide seven-day walk-in access.

The first community hubs and emergency departments opened previously in 2025 in Tower Hamlets, London, with hubs providing crisis prevention, employment and housing support, and limited overnight beds, and MHEDs delivering same-day crisis support and collaboration with police and ambulance services.

The hubs will offer walk-in support without medical referrals, with some facilities in existing high-street premises and others newly built, aiming to prevent crisis escalation through easier access.
