Waymo is expanding its autonomous ride-hailing service into the San Francisco Peninsula and additional areas of Los Angeles, increasing its total commercial service territory.

Starting August 7, 2024, Waymo One will cover new locations in Los Angeles, including Marina del Rey, Mar Vista, and parts of Hollywood, extending its service area by 16 square miles.

In San Francisco, the service area is expanding by 10 square miles, now totaling 55 square miles, which includes Daly City, Broadmoor, and Colma.

Waymo's fleet operates over 50,000 paid trips weekly across its markets, although the company continues to rely on funding from its parent company, Alphabet.

This expansion follows the California Public Utilities Commission's approval for commercial robotaxi services in Los Angeles and the San Francisco Peninsula, granted in March 2024.

Waymo's recent growth in service areas reflects increasing confidence in its driverless technology, particularly as it competes with other companies in the market.

The service utilizes Jaguar I-Pace vehicles to complete over 50,000 paid trips weekly across San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix.

Waymo One operates as a fully autonomous service with no human driver, although an 'autonomous specialist' may be present to monitor the technology.

Ride costs and wait times for Waymo's services are generally comparable to those of Uber and Lyft, with pricing varying based on demand.

Despite its rapid expansion, Waymo aims to scale its commercial operations to reach more customers and achieve profitability, a goal it has yet to realize.

Waymo is in preliminary discussions with San Francisco International Airport for potential non-commercial operations, while it has not yet engaged with Los Angeles International Airport.

Waymo's 'Other Bets' unit, which includes the robotaxi service, reported a quarterly revenue increase to $365 million, despite widening losses of $1.13 billion.
