Three children were removed from a hazardous home in York, Nebraska, after a 4-year-old girl arrived at preschool with a black eye and bruising.

An inspection of Murray's home revealed a strong odor of urine, overflowing trash, and hazardous conditions including a power sanding tool easily accessible to the children.

The investigation began when a preschool worker noticed the girl's injuries and reported them to authorities, revealing a pattern of abuse.

The bedrooms were cluttered with trash, and two doors were found to be lockable from the outside, increasing the risk to the children.

The children's caretaker, 26-year-old Grace Murray, was arrested and charged with three felony counts of child abuse following the investigation.

During questioning, the girl revealed her mother had 'spanked' her, and her 6-year-old brother confirmed they were often punished and locked in their rooms overnight.

Murray was found with the third child in a car filled with trash and rotten food, leading to all three children being placed in protective custody.

School officials noted ongoing hygiene issues with the children, prompting the involvement of the Department of Health and Human Services and the York County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities had previously responded to nine calls regarding the home from the Department of Health and Human Services in the past year.

Authorities executed a search warrant at Murray's home, which was described as 'filthy and dangerous,' revealing hazardous conditions.

Murray was arraigned on April 17, 2025, with her next court appearance scheduled for April 23, 2025.

The living areas were cluttered with trash, dirty dishes, and a neglected litter box, while some rooms were locked from the outside and uninhabitable.
