Georgia Governor Brian Kemp appointed Benjamin Land to the Georgia Supreme Court on July 17, 2025, filling the vacancy left by former Chief Justice Michael Boggs.

Land, who previously served on the Court of Appeals after winning a full six-year term in 2024, has a distinguished judicial background including service on the Superior Court for the Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit since 2018.

With nearly 30 years of legal experience, Land has practiced law in Columbus, focusing on complex civil litigation and achieving numerous record verdicts, and has handled class action lawsuits.

A graduate of the University of Georgia with both undergraduate and law degrees, Land finished second in his law school class and clerked for the Georgia Supreme Court.

Supreme Court Chief Justice Nels Peterson expressed confidence in Land’s qualifications, highlighting his diverse legal experience and noting that his background will be an asset to the court.

Governor Kemp praised Land for his fairness, strong work ethic, and integrity, emphasizing his extensive experience as both a litigator and judge, and lauded his reputation among peers and the public.

Land has been actively involved in community service, serving on boards such as Columbus Area Habitat for Humanity and the Columbus Bar Association, and has received awards like the William B. Spann Jr. award for Pro Bono advocacy.

He has held leadership roles including president of the Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit Bar Association and the Columbus Bar Association, and has been involved in various community and professional organizations across Georgia.

His elevation to the Supreme Court creates a vacancy on the Court of Appeals, which will be filled through a nomination process by the state's Judicial Nominating Commission.

Land previously dissented in a 2024 ruling that disqualified Fani Willis from a 2020 election interference case due to her relationship with a former special prosecutor, and was involved in a controversial January ruling regarding charges against former President Donald Trump.

The official swearing-in ceremony for Land has not yet been scheduled but is expected to occur before August 1, 2025.

Land was previously shortlisted among judicial candidates for the Supreme Court vacancy, including those from federal, appellate, and superior courts.
