South Carolina Launches $825M I-95 Expansion to Boost Economy and Safety
August 15, 2025
South Carolina has launched a record-breaking $825 million project to widen a 10-mile segment of Interstate 95, from the Georgia border to just north of Exit 8, as part of a broader multi-phase infrastructure upgrade.
Interstate 95 carries about a third of the state's traffic, making it vital for economic growth, transportation of goods, and regional mobility, especially with increasing activity at the Port of Savannah.
The expansion aims to add a third lane to alleviate bottlenecks at the Georgia border, with plans to extend from the Georgia line to Orangeburg County and from the North Carolina border to Florence County.
Much of the funding for this project comes from federal pandemic relief money, complemented by state investments and support from federal officials.
Governor Henry McMaster attended the project's kickoff in Hardeeville on August 14, emphasizing its importance for economic growth and safety.
The project is crucial for regional safety, evacuation routes during natural disasters, and supporting economic development in southern Jasper County, especially with increased port activity.
Construction is set to begin at the end of August and will continue into 2030, with most work scheduled at night to minimize daytime lane closures, ensuring four lanes remain open during peak hours.
Key features include the construction of 13 new bridges, interchange improvements at Exit 5 and Exit 8, and a new interchange at Purrysburg Road, which will host a Buc-ee's opening in 2028.
Funding has been secured through a combination of state funds, federal grants, and efforts by Congressman Jim Clyburn and U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham.
This interstate expansion is part of ongoing efforts to address long-standing transportation issues and improve regional connectivity.
State officials emphasize that these infrastructure improvements are essential for economic prosperity, transportation efficiency, and positioning South Carolina for future growth.
Future phases will expand 13 miles of interstate between Exits 8 and 22 from two to three lanes, and include improvements to 11 bridges and overpasses, with additional widening plans for I-26, I-85, and I-77, and a $7 billion project to rebuild I-526 in Charleston.
Construction efforts will prioritize nighttime work to minimize disruptions, with the project scheduled to continue into 2030, ensuring continuous four-lane access during peak hours.
