The upgrade timeline aligns with the F-15EX arriving around 2028 and eight KC-46s expected by about 2030, all with the aim of closing the workforce gap between the aging A-10s and the new platforms at Selfridge.

Rep. John James is pressing Congress to authorize $638 million in military construction funds for eight Selfridge Air National Guard Base projects in Macomb County, aimed at preparing for two new aircraft platforms over the next five years.

The proposed $638 million package covers a dual bay KC-46 hangar, a maintenance complex for the F-15EX, a runway realignment, taxiway extensions, a KC-46 training complex, and a KC-46 squadron operations building, with specific costs allocated to each project.

Michigan officials are coordinating with the National Guard Bureau and state funds to support the runway relocation and related infrastructure, including the William P. Rosso Highway relocation and improvements to bolster expanded mission capabilities.

Selfridge’s commander Brig. Gen. Leah Voelker notes the project could total about $1 billion over five to seven years, with roughly a third of main infrastructure design work anticipated to be completed by May.

James frames the funding as a long-term national defense investment and a safeguard for the country’s security, stressing forward-looking planning for future capabilities.

Federally funded timing and amounts hinge on Congress, with James planning continued advocacy in Washington to secure funding across party lines.
