Google to Pay $700M in Antitrust Settlement, Revamps Android App Practices
December 20, 2023
Google has agreed to pay $700 million to settle an antitrust lawsuit filed by 52 attorneys general across the US.
The lawsuit accused Google of unlawfully monopolizing Android app distribution and in-app payment processing.
As part of the settlement, Google will pay $630 million in compensation to around 102 million U.S. consumers and an additional $70 million to the participating states.
Google is required to make changes to their business practices, including allowing developers to use alternative billing systems and supporting third-party app stores.
The agreement also prohibits Google from entering exclusive app store contracts and allows the installation of third-party apps on Android phones from outside the Google Play Store.
The settlement is pending court approval and the stipulations will remain in effect for four to seven years.
Pennsylvania residents will receive around $20.58 million in reimbursement as part of the settlement.
Epic Games, the maker of Fortnite, rejected the settlement and is taking its case against Google to trial.
