Child Sex Offenders Found Leading School Tours at Aboriginal Sites in Victoria
March 18, 2024
Two registered child sex offenders have been found engaging with schoolchildren at Aboriginal meeting places in Victoria.
The offenders were involved in conducting cultural tours for schoolchildren, with photographic evidence showing one offender posing with kids.
Current policies at these Aboriginal organizations do not mandate background checks for new members, allowing a sex offender to participate for a year undetected.
While the Victorian state government requires Working With Children Checks for workers, both paid and volunteer, this does not extend to organization members.
In response to these incidents, Willum Warrain, an Aboriginal community group, has revised its policies to prevent registered sex offenders from joining.
