EU Delivers €1 Billion Loan to Ukraine, Bolstering Support Amid Conflict
May 9, 2025
On May 8, 2025, the European Commission announced the disbursement of a one-billion-euro loan tranche to Ukraine as part of its macro-financial assistance program.
This latest tranche, valued at approximately 1.1 billion US dollars, is part of a broader commitment by the EU to support Ukraine amid ongoing conflict.
With this latest payment, the EU has now provided a total of 6 billion euros in support since the beginning of 2025, contributing to a larger commitment of 18.1 billion euros.
This loan is part of a comprehensive package of loans totaling 45 billion euros from the G7 and the European Union aimed at assisting Ukraine.
The current disbursement marks the fourth loan made in 2025 under the G7 Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration initiative.
The loans are intended to be repaid using proceeds from frozen Russian assets held in the EU, reinforcing accountability for Russia's actions in Ukraine.
Commission Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis emphasized that 'Russia will pay for the destruction it has caused to Ukraine,' highlighting the EU's stance on accountability.
Dombrovskis further underscored the EU's ongoing support for Ukraine, which encompasses political, financial, economic, and military assistance.
This disbursement coincides with Ukraine's Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in World War II, adding symbolic significance to the financial aid.
Since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, the EU and its 27 member states have delivered nearly 150 billion euros in economic, humanitarian, and military aid to Ukraine.
