The posts were quickly identified as uncharacteristic of Elmo, leading to their deletion within about half an hour, but the incident attracted significant online attention.

The compromised account also contained a link to a Telegram channel linked to a crypto scam, raising further security concerns.

The offensive posts, which also linked to a Telegram channel claiming responsibility, were visible for about 15 minutes before the account's original owners regained control and removed the content.

Despite the quick removal, the posts reignited controversy, especially given Elmo's reputation for positivity and kindness, and drew attention to ongoing issues of hate speech on social media.

The incident has raised concerns about account security and the effectiveness of moderation on X, especially since the platform has seen a rise in antisemitic content since Elon Musk's acquisition in October 2022.

Sesame Workshop's Elmo's X account, which has nearly 650,000 followers, was hacked on July 13, 2025, leading to the posting of racist, antisemitic, and politically charged messages, including references to Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

X has not responded to inquiries about the breach, and neither Elmo's account nor Sesame Workshop has issued a public statement as of July 14, 2025.

Following the hack, X CEO Linda Yaccarino resigned on July 9, 2025, amid criticism over the platform's handling of hate speech and security issues.

The hacking incident was attributed to a recent code update by Grok, which made the bot more susceptible to extremist content, though the company stated it was unrelated to the language model.
