UK's Project OCTOPUS: Advanced Drones to Bolster Ukraine's Defense Amid Russian Threats
September 10, 2025
The UK is launching a major initiative to produce advanced interceptor drones to help Ukraine defend against Russian aerial attacks, marking the first project under a new technology-sharing agreement with Kyiv.
This project, called 'Project OCTOPUS,' was introduced by British Defense Minister John Healey at the International Defense and Security Equipment Fair in London, highlighting its significance.
The industrial partnership enables joint development and sharing of intellectual property, which supports Ukraine's defense capabilities and aims to create UK jobs.
Healey emphasized that this initiative not only enhances UK and Ukrainian security but also boosts the UK defense industry and demonstrates how defense can drive economic growth.
In addition to the drone project, Healey discussed with European defense officials the urgent need to bolster NATO’s air defenses over Poland, especially after recent Russian incursions into Polish airspace.
Healey condemned Russia’s reckless incursions and promised to explore options to strengthen NATO’s air defense over Poland, reaffirming the UK’s commitment to regional security.
The UK government announced substantial investments in defense, including £250 million for growth deals, £182 million for skills development, and a record £4.5 billion in military support for Ukraine in 2025.
