Ski mountaineering, nicknamed skimo, will debut in Italy and blends ascent, descent, and on-foot sections with skis carried on the athlete’s backpack.

In skimo, climbers use skins for the ascent, switch to boots for on-foot segments, remove skins for the downhill, and compete in heats, semifinals, and a final.
