Ford Recalls 255,404 Focus Models for Faulty Valve; Free Software Update Offered
June 12, 2026
Dealers will perform a free powertrain software update to fix the issue, with no major parts replacement needed unless other problems are found.
Ford plans a PCM software update at dealerships, and owners who paid out of pocket for prior fixes may be reimbursed.
The defect is linked to a similar 2019 recall, but the latest recall’s full population did not receive the original remedy as labeled; no crashes or injuries reported yet.
The recall covers only vehicles that received incorrect repairs from a previous service action; VIN verification will be possible after the NHTSA database is updated.
Ford is recalling 255,404 Focus models from model years 2012–2018 due to a faulty canister purge valve, which can cause sudden engine stalls and raise crash and injury risk.
Warning indicators include a malfunction indicator light or inaccurate fuel gauge readings that signal a compromised purge valve and potential engine stall.
Owner notifications begin in early July, with VIN lookups available on NHTSA’s site and Ford’s helpline for confirmation.
Letters informing owners are expected to be mailed on July 6, 2026.
The problem stems from vehicles that did not receive the correct software update in a prior repair, leaving the Powertrain Control Module unable to detect a stuck purge valve despite a repair.
This recall reflects an eight-year defect history, building on earlier software updates from 2018–2019 that didn’t reach all affected vehicles, necessitating this follow-up action.
Owners should schedule the update promptly to minimize the risk of unexpected stalls on highways or in urban driving.
VINs involved will be searchable on NHTSA.gov starting July 6.
