Parkrun Celebrates Millionth Event Milestone with Dame Kelly Holmes at Bushy Park
June 13, 2026
The milestone is extraordinary, and while the first million took decades, the next is expected to come much sooner; retirement planning is underway to ensure continuity.
Parkrun has supported Sinton-Hewitt’s mental health, transforming his week through regular participation and community engagement.
Parkrun founder Paul Sinton-Hewitt described the movement as affordable, park-based, and social, emphasizing accessibility and community over competition.
Darren Wood became the first runner to reach 1,000 parkruns and continues to volunteer despite reduced running, illustrating long-term community commitment.
From a 13-person start in 2004, the parkrun community has grown to more than 2,800 locations in 23 countries, delivering a weekly social and physical activity experience.
He jokes that 1,000 parkruns still feels distant, having completed 614, and notes that volunteering remains a core part of his involvement.
At 65, Sinton-Hewitt sees extraordinary growth and believes the next million events will come much faster, with retirement from daily operations in view once the team is ready.
He emphasizes that the next million events are likely to arrive quicker than the first million and reiterates plans to step back when the organization is securely led.
The one-millionth parkrun event was celebrated at Bushy Park, with Dame Kelly Holmes among the participants, marking a milestone for the global free 5km Saturday parkruns and Sunday 2km junior parkruns.
Sinton-Hewitt says he has completed 614 parkruns and envisions retirement from active involvement, confident the organization is well-led by a strong team and that he will stay only while the team wants him involved.
Sinton-Hewitt highlights social benefits: ongoing conversations, friendships, light rivalry among regulars, and broad participation across ages, including many in their 60s to 80s.
Parkrun is launching a health and inclusion strategy in the UK and stresses it is a charity reliant on ongoing participation, volunteering, and donations to sustain growth and accessibility.
