Essex County Council is embarking on an ambitious initiative to install over 5,000 new electric vehicle charging sockets across the region, backed by an £8.3 million grant from the Government’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) fund.

The installation of these chargers will take place in various locations over the coming months, targeting both urban and rural areas to effectively reduce network gaps.

As part of this rollout, new chargers will be installed in Saffron Walden, complementing existing chargers that are already operational in Chelmsford and Colchester.

This initiative builds on previous funding received in March, which facilitated the installation of more than 60 charging sockets that were selected by local residents.

Councillor Peter Schwier has highlighted the environmental benefits of electric vehicles, noting that the expanded charging infrastructure will enhance accessibility for Essex residents.

Councillor Tom Cunningham emphasized the council's commitment to providing diverse travel choices and facilitating a transition to electric vehicles, especially for residents without off-street parking.

Residents are encouraged to participate in the planning process by suggesting additional locations for electric chargers through the Essex Highways website.
