Stuttgart Unveils Emission-Free Future with Hydrogen-Powered Buses
April 25, 2025
Transport Minister Winfried Hermann underscored the critical need for transitioning to alternative drive systems, highlighting the new buses' role in promoting cleaner air and reducing noise pollution.
On April 14, 2025, Stuttgart's public transport operator SSB launched the first of ten Mercedes-Benz eCitaro G articulated fuel cell buses, marking a pivotal move towards emission-free public transport.
These eCitaro G buses, which began operations in February 2025, are equipped with hydrogen drive technology, significantly advancing Stuttgart's goal of developing a fully emission-free bus fleet.
Mayor Dr. Frank Nopper emphasized that the introduction of these fuel cell buses signifies the start of a zero-emission future for public transport in Stuttgart.
Each articulated bus can accommodate up to 124 passengers and is outfitted with modern safety features, including Sideguard Assist, Traffic Sign Assist, and a comprehensive video surveillance system.
The buses are designed for operational efficiency in urban traffic, featuring high-voltage battery packs, hydrogen tanks, and a remarkable range of up to 360 kilometers.
Passenger comfort is prioritized in the design of these buses, which include spacious seating, air conditioning, and facilities for wheelchair users and strollers.
To support this transition, SSB is upgrading its bus depots for electric buses and has established a hydrogen filling station in Gaisburg, which will soon be connected via pipeline.
SSB plans to invest 31 million euros in emission-free buses, with financial backing of 1.4 million euros from the state and 3.4 million euros from the city of Stuttgart.
