ZF Unveils Next-Gen Electric Range Extenders for 2026, Tackling EV Range Anxiety and Cost Issues
April 29, 2025
Historically, vehicles like the Chevrolet Volt and BMW i3 have utilized range extenders, although such systems have become rare due to advancements in electric vehicle range.
This technology effectively addresses 'range anxiety' among electric vehicle buyers, particularly in areas where charging infrastructure is limited.
ZF is set to launch a new generation of electric range extenders, known as the eRE and eRE+, which will be available in 2026.
These new range extenders will be compatible with both 400V and 800V vehicle architectures and will include an integrated inverter and planetary gearing.
ZF argues that range extenders are more efficient and cheaper to produce than traditional plug-in hybrids, benefiting from shorter development cycles and simpler supply chains.
Both models are designed with adjustable power outputs, allowing for 93 to 147 horsepower for the eRE and 93 to 201 horsepower for the eRE+, tailored to meet customer specifications.
The decision to produce these systems comes amid a slower adoption rate of fully electric vehicles, driven by consumer concerns over charging infrastructure.
The growing interest in range extenders is reflected in the efforts of other manufacturers, including Dodge and VW-backed Scout Motors, who are also developing similar technologies.
China currently leads the development of range extended electric vehicles (REEV), capable of traveling over 700 kilometers, influenced by ZF's innovations.
The eRE model will deliver power outputs ranging from 70 to 110 kW, while the eRE+ will offer between 70 to 150 kW, featuring enhancements like a clutch and differential.
Range extenders enable manufacturers to utilize smaller batteries, which can lower overall vehicle costs and assist in complying with emissions regulations.
Dr. Otmar Scharrer from ZF emphasized that range extenders present a cost-effective alternative compared to larger batteries and plug-in hybrids.
