Zeekr Unveils Luxury Hybrid SUV to Rival Rolls-Royce, Porsche, and Range Rover
July 10, 2025
Zeekr claims that the 9X hybrid sets new standards for long-range plug-in hybrids, combining fast charging speeds, strong acceleration, and vibration control suitable for diverse driving conditions.
Zeekr’s hybrid strategy positions it as one of the few domestic Chinese EV manufacturers offering plug-in hybrids, with Nio being the only other domestic company focusing solely on pure EVs, while Tesla continues to produce only pure EVs.
This hybrid approach helps Zeekr meet China’s strict NEV credit quotas by classifying hybrids as low fuel consumption vehicles, easing regulatory pressures and supporting its market expansion.
Zeekr’s hybrid models serve as a strategic bridge, allowing the company to develop flexible, modular platforms that can transition to fully electric vehicles as battery prices decline, ensuring technological relevance in the evolving market.
The Zeekr 9X features a sophisticated design with upscale elements such as chrome grille, Maybach-like 22-inch wheels, and a blacked-out Nightshade edition, and measures over 5.2 meters in length, larger than a Toyota LandCruiser.
Under the hood, the 9X is powered by Zeekr’s new SEAS architecture, combining a turbocharged 2.0-liter petrol engine with three electric motors, delivering a combined peak power of 1030kW and accelerating from 0-100 km/h in just 3.1 seconds.
The hybrid SUV is equipped with a 70kWh CATL battery, the largest in a hybrid SUV, offering an electric-only range of up to 380 km and supporting ultra-fast charging from 20% to 80% in approximately nine minutes.
The vehicle’s hybrid system can also recharge via the petrol engine, which boasts a thermal efficiency of over 46%, designed for high-performance electric hybrids, providing a versatile powertrain for both urban and highway driving.
Inside, the Zeekr 9X boasts a luxurious interior with a two-tone design, wood inlays, a large landscape touchscreen, physical controls, wireless charging, and second-row captain’s chairs with a roof-mounted TV screen.
Advanced safety features include a comprehensive suite of active safety and driver assist technologies, supporting Level 3 autonomous driving with multiple sensors and LiDAR units.
The SUV features advanced suspension and driving modes, including dual-chamber air suspension with a ground clearance of 288mm and seven terrain modes such as snow, mud, and rocks, enhancing its all-terrain capabilities.
Zeekr, the premium EV brand under Geely Auto based in Hangzhou, is expanding its lineup by introducing its first plug-in hybrid flagship SUV, the Zeekr 9X, aiming to compete with luxury brands like Rolls-Royce, Porsche, and Range Rover in terms of luxury, performance, and all-terrain capability.
This move to hybrids is part of Zeekr’s broader strategy to navigate China's regulatory landscape, reduce costs, and appeal to a wider market segment amid increasing competition in the country’s automotive industry.
