BYD's Largest Recall: Over 115,000 Vehicles Recalled for Battery and Design Flaws
October 17, 2025
Chinese automaker BYD is undertaking its largest recall to date, involving over 115,000 vehicles including the Tang series and Yuan Pro models manufactured between 2015 and 2022, due to design flaws and battery installation issues.
This recall follows previous safety-related recalls, such as nearly 97,000 Dolphin and Yuan Plus EVs in September 2024 for steering control unit faults that posed fire hazards, and 6,843 Fangchengbao Bao 5 plug-in hybrid SUVs in January over fire risk concerns.
In response to battery safety issues, BYD plans to reinforce battery casings with a free application of a special sealant to eliminate water ingress and safety risks.
Chinese regulators are also proposing new safety regulations requiring mechanical door releases accessible from both inside and outside the vehicle to improve safety standards.
China's leadership in the electric vehicle industry is supported by strong government subsidies and early investments, which have increased competition and led to tariffs from the EU on Chinese EV imports to protect local manufacturers.
Safety concerns in Chinese EVs are not limited to BYD, with incidents such as a fatal accident involving Xiaomi's EV and safety issues with Tesla's electric door handles during fires or power outages highlighting broader industry challenges.
