India Bolsters Battery Manufacturing with $50M Investment in GFCL's Integrated Facility
December 7, 2025
GFCL brings a fluorochemicals background and a multi-year capex plan of about ₹6,000 crore through 2027-28, including significant EV-related investments to enable scale.
GFCL EV is positioned as a battery-materials powerhouse that supplies cell makers, pack assemblers, and EV/storage OEMs, rather than serving as a cell-assembly plant.
The plant will consolidate multiple value-chain steps under one roof, including LiPF6 salt, formulated electrolytes, LFP cathode material, and PVDF/PTFE binders for India’s EV and energy-storage markets.
A new investment aims to strengthen India’s domestic advance-chemistry battery manufacturing and integrate the country into global electric mobility and energy storage supply chains, supporting energy security, clean mobility, and local value creation.
IFC will invest roughly US$50 million in GFCL EV Products Limited, via compulsorily convertible instruments, to establish India’s first fully integrated battery-materials production facility.
The $50 million investment will support large-scale production of LiPF6 electrolyte salt, formulated electrolytes, LFP cathode materials, and PVDF/PTFE binders used in EVs and energy-storage systems.
Risks include volatility in lithium and cathode markets, potential margin pressure from competition, execution risk of building a large chemical complex, environmental/ESG concerns, and policy/tariff uncertainties.
GFCL EV positions itself as a rare large-scale integrated battery-materials player globally, aiming to scale capacity and deepen India’s participation in critical battery components.
The initiative seeks to localize critical battery materials in India, aligning with Make in India and reducing import dependence and foreign exchange exposure.
GFCL describes itself as part of the INOXGFL Group, with a manufacturing footprint in Gujarat and a reach that spans global markets.
It forms part of a broader strategy to develop a high-value manufacturing cluster around advanced battery materials and energy storage applications.
The funding will back development of an integrated plant at Jolva near Bharuch in Gujarat, marking a milestone in India’s battery-materials ecosystem.
