Europe has emerged as a key growth market for Chinese autonomous driving firms seeking to commercialize beyond China amid competition and regulatory scrutiny, with earlier expansions already to France, Belgium, Switzerland, Spain, Slovakia and plans for Denmark.

WeRide plans to launch a public robotaxi service in Denmark in partnership with GreenMobility in the first half of 2027, contingent on regulatory approvals.

Rivalries are intensifying, with Pony.ai partnering with Uber and Verne for Europe’s first commercial robotaxi service, Baidu Apollo Go testing with Lyft Freenow in London, and Momenta conducting trials in several German cities.

GreenMobility, which runs the Nordic region’s largest free-floating EV car-sharing network with over 1,500 electric vehicles, will bring operational expertise to the deployment.

WeRide’s expansion depends on regulatory approvals, deployment costs, fleet safety and reliability, consumer adoption, and the ability to operate across diverse traffic and weather conditions.

Customers will access the service using WeRide’s GXR autonomous vehicle, designed to comply with EU regulations and suitable for urban environments.

Investors will monitor regulatory progress, the utilization of test fleets, and pricing strategies as firms move from pilots to fully commercial robotaxi operations.

Denmark’s favorable EV adoption, advanced digital infrastructure, and supportive regulations position it as an attractive market for autonomous mobility and broader smart mobility initiatives.
