Australia's EV Surge: February 2026 Sees Record 11.8% Market Share for Electric Vehicles

Affordable EVs remained popular, with BYD Atto 1 and BYD Atto 3 among the best-sellers in the entry-level segment.
China emerged as the dominant source of new vehicles, accounting for about 25,781 units and a 50.5% YoY increase, while Japan declined 31.3% and Korea fell 2.9%.
Hybrids fell 9.6% year over year, driven mainly by an 83.6% drop in Toyota RAV4 as it underwent a model transition, while plug-in hybrids rose about 20% and petrol vehicles declined.

Overall electrified vehicles reached 27,437 for the period, representing 30.2% of the market, with hybrids at 15.3% and plug-in hybrids at 6.5%.
February 2026 saw EVs gain an 11.8% market share with 11,134 EVs on the road, as the fuel mix shifted toward electrification while petrol usage declined.
