Stellantis Recalls 194,000 Hybrid Jeep SUVs Over Fire Risk Concerns
October 2, 2024On September 30, 2024, Stellantis announced a significant recall affecting 194,000 plug-in hybrid electric Jeep SUVs due to potential fire risks.
The recall specifically targets the Jeep Wrangler 4xe models from 2020 to 2024 and the Grand Cherokee 4xe models from 2022 to 2024.
This decision was prompted by a routine review of customer data that uncovered 13 reported fire incidents and two injuries, leading to an internal investigation.
All reported battery fires occurred while the vehicles were parked and turned off, though the exact cause of these incidents remains unknown.
The battery packs, manufactured by Samsung SDI, have been identified as having potential 'separator damage combined with other complex interactions' that could lead to fires.
Stellantis estimates that only about 5% of the recalled vehicles, approximately 9,700 units, may actually contain the battery separator defect.
To mitigate fire risks, Stellantis advises owners to deplete the battery charge and avoid recharging their vehicles until repairs are completed.
Additionally, owners are recommended to park their vehicles outdoors and away from structures until the recall repairs are made.
The current remedy involves a software update for the high-voltage battery pack, with potential battery replacements, and notifications to owners are expected by mid-October.
This recall primarily affects customers in the United States, with 154,032 vehicles recalled, alongside 14,000 in Canada, 700 in Mexico, and nearly 26,000 in other regions.
This is not the first recall for hybrid Jeeps; a previous recall in November 2023 involved 32,125 Jeep Wrangler hybrids for similar fire risks.
Stellantis has assured affected customers that a remedy is forthcoming and they will be notified when they can schedule service.
